Did you know that aboriginal people have been living in Australia for more than 50,000 years. There are more than 500 different aboriginal groups located in Australia. one group is called the Alyawarra. They live in north-east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. Australian aboriginals are a group of people who are deemed to be the indigenous occupants of Australia. Despite this, the status of the indigenous people has throughout time remained a paradox with the federal government. The Australian High Court acknowledges that the Australian indigenous people have equal rights to the Australian inhabitants. Settlers have settled in Australia for over a century since it gained its Federation status and joined the commonwealth of countries. The state of Australia has been acknowledged unique with comparison to fellow British former colonies. This is because as a state it never signed any treaties with its indigenous people.
European explorers who ventured to Australia brought not only new diseases and commodities unknown on the island continent but they also brought ideas and attitudes towards native peoples that had developed over centuries of contact in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Most of these ideas were negative. The Europeans believed that non-whites as savages and heathens. William Dampier, a captain took a voyage around the World in 1697, described western Australian Aborigines as the “miserablest People of the World”, while James Cook, another famous captain, admired Australian aboriginals idyllic simplicity. Conflict over land and resources rapidly increased hostile behavior. As violence spread, frontier attitudes worsened to deny the very humanity of Aboriginal people. In 1837, Reverend E. Yates declared that a peace treaty to be signed.
In 1788, the first fleet arrived on Australian shores. The arrival of the Europeans created the beginning of the Frontier War and the start of very poor treatment of the Aboriginal people. The aboriginals were shocked when the Europeans confronted them. It is thought that around 20000 Aborigines were killed in the war. This number was way higher than the number of white people killed. 2000 white people were killed in the process. Victoria alone was home to 1200 Aborigines that had been murdered in the Frontier war. This violence could have been avoided if the two cultures met. The main reason for violence was the battle for the Aboriginals land. The law of terra nullius was crucial as it said that the land belonged to no one so the aborigines were defenceless.
After the Europeans won the war there was a assimilation process that was extremely racist as it said that the aboriginal parents were not qualified enough to take care of their own children. The children were almost stolen from their parents and put into white families. The mothers of the children were told lies about the whereabouts of their kids and were told everything was fine. In fact nothing was fine. The effects on the children of these families must have been devastating. They were forced to work terribly, and found it hard to earn very small amounts of money and food. They were treated a little better than slaves. The effects on the parents would have been extremely hard to live with. To have a child taken away from you from you for the reason that you were an aboriginal from Australian.
The High Court of Australia overthrew the ruling rights of aboriginal people in 1992 when it said that Australia’s common law recognized indigenous people’s property rights and wanted to make a law that all indigo ions Australians would have property rights.. The Mabo judgement, as it was called, was a huge step in Aboriginal Rights.
On the first sitting day of the Australian Parliament, 13 February 2008, Prime Minister Rudd apologised on behalf of all previous Parliaments and governments for the many wrongs done to Indigenous people, and in particular to the “Stolen Generations”, those thousands of children removed from Indigenous families under past government policies. Rudd said sorry for the indigenous families “to close the gap” between these diverse cultures.
The current national population is 22.4 million, of whom 550,818—or 2.5 per cent identify themselves as Indigenous. In modernity Australia's official language is English. Any indigenous families find it hard to assess health care and beneficial needs such as proper jobs. Only 47% of indigenous children complete high school. Indigenous juveniles are imprisoned seventeen times compared to the national average. There have been some improvements to the racism between indigenous people of AustralIa though. President runs report in 2010 didn't suggest to stop the racism but to offer more beneficial needs to aboriginals.
